Marines select EDACS VHF digital trunking communications system An EDACS VHF trunking system will provide all base radio communications for three separate sites on the sprawling Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, Cal. The radio system will be used to support the Base mission, which is to procure, maintain, repair and distribute supplies and equipment to Marine Corps Forces west of the Mississippi and in the Far East and Asia. Lynchburg, VA., (March xx, 2000) - Com-Net Ericsson Critical Radio Systems today announced delivery of a four-channel digital trunked VHF EDACS system to support the communication needs for the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) located in Barstow, California. An additional four channels will be added to the system at a later date. The logistics base is comprised of three principal sites. Nebo, which encompasses 1,568 acres, functions as the base headquarters and is the main facility fir administration, storage, recreational activities, shopping and housing functions. The Yermo Annex encompasses about 2,000 acres and is primarily a storage and industrial complex: and the third site, approximately 2,500 acres, serves as rifle and pistol ranges. The trunked VHF communications system will be used to support all base operations over the 6,068 acre base, including military police. The communications site will be located at Elephant Mountain and will provide coverage for the entire base. According to Com-Net Ericsson's Federal Systems manager Kevin Fleming, the selection of the UHF EDACS system was made possible by a 19-year old relationship with MCLB established by Ericsson's Reseller representative in Southern California, Hi-Desert Communications, Inc. "Hi-Desert has been instrumental in the initial system implementation and will soon begin refurbishment of the additional four-channel equipment," says Fleming. The additional equipment was acquired by MCLB Barstow on an equipment re-use contract and was previously utilized by the U.S. Marine Corps in support of both the Hunter Warrior and Urban Warrior Phases of the Sea Dragon Exercises. The original contract was awarded in November, 1999, and the complete eight-channel system is expected to be operational by the end of the year. The Marine Corps' Logistics Bases are comprised of three major components - MCLB, Albany, Georgia; MCLB Barstow, California; and Blount Island Command, Jacksonville, Florida. The mission of the Barstow Logistics Base is to procure, maintain, repair and distribute supplies and equipment to Marine Corps forces west of the Mississippi and in the Far East and Asia.
